Madison County is located in west central New York State, east of Syracuse and bordering in part on Oneida Lake and Oneida Creek to the north. The county was created from Chenango County in 1806 and is about to celebrate its bicentennial. Cazenovia is both the name of the town and it's largest village. The village of Cazenovia is located on a beautiful lake. It is home of Cazenovia College. The town also includes Abell Corners, Ballina, Delphi Station, New Woodstock, Rippleton, Union, and West Woodstock. DeRuyter is a town located in the southwest corner of the county, includes the village of DeRuyter on DeRuyter Lake as well as the hamlets of Puckerville, Quaker Settlement, Sheds, and Sheds Corners. Eaton - Pratts Hollow, located here, is the geographic center of the state. The largest village in Eaton is Morrisville, home of the Morrisville State College. The tiny Chenango River flows through the town, which also includes Eagleville, Eaton, Lebanon Reservoir, Pine Woods and West Eaton. Hamilton - This town on the southern border of our area includes the lovely village of Hamilton , home of Colgate University. It also includes Hubbardsville, Loomis Corners, Poolville and South, East and West Hamilton. Madison - The village of Madison is well-known for its many antique shops and the antique fair it hosts every August. Bouckville, Durfee Corner, Lake Moraine, Madison Center, Sigby Corner and Solsville are also found here. Nelson - This town, home of Nelson and Erieville and pastoral landscapes, has a population of about 2,000 people. Smithfield, located in the center of the county, is rich in history. Peterboro, named for Peter Smith, the original land owner, is the site of the Gerrit Smith Estate and the Peter Smith Land Office. Stockbridge includes Munnsville, the home of Ferris Industries, as well as Bridges Corners, Five Chimneys Corner, Stockbridge and Valley Mills. The east town line borders on Oneida County. City of Oneida - Located in Madison County, this city has about 11,000 citizens. Oneida was also the site of the Oneida Community, a utopian community that the flourished from 1849-1879. The Mansion House, which was built by the Community, is now a national historic site and can be toured today. Oneida County - In 1683 this was part of Albany County, an enormous county that included the northern part of the state, all of present-day Vermont, and in theory, extended westward to the Pacific Ocean! Needless to say, it was reduced in size several times between 1766 and 1805. Oneida Lake , in the northwest corner, now forms part of the western boundary, and the Adirondack State Park is on the northeast. Augusta - In addition to beautiful farm land, this town includes the Village of Oriskany Falls as well as the hamlets of Augusta, Five Corners, Knoxboro, Lloyds Corners, and Newell Corners. Its south and west town lines border Madison County. Vernon - Sherrill, the smallest city in the state and the location of our office, is here. You will also find here the villages of Vernon and Oneida Castle as well as Oneida Ltd., the Vernon Downs Race Track and the Turning Stone Casino. |
